When I left Gambia, I brought with me a lifetime of confidence. I had taken part in Miss Gambia. I was used to standing on stages, speaking to crowds, wearing bold colours and beautiful fabrics. I felt seen.
I felt like myself.
But moving to a new country changed everything. I didn’t know how to fit in. The safest thing seemed to be to blend in, to shrink, to hide.
